Penclawdd artist David Randall Davies shared his Second World War memories and the impact of the military camp with Ann Roberts.
"The British Army's presence was audibly felt in those days when a large gun, located behind the Berthlwyd pub - now the Chinese restaurant, The Sea Garden - was fired down the estuary. It was used to test batches of ammunition that would eventually be deployed against enemy forces. When they were testing, the gun was fired usually at intervals of about 10 minutes, and the report rattled and shook windows throughout the village. Later, the fired shells were retrieved for examination. Not all the shells were accounted for, which is why warning signs of danger might still be seen in the marsh below Gwernffrwd.See the full content of this document
