Support for Green Scheme ; We Say...

Summary

ONE-THIRD of new houses in some parts of Britain are being built on gardens as developers take advantage of planning rules to concrete over green spaces.

Campaigners are warning that 30,000 gardens a year are disappearing as a result of garden grabbing: a pity! But there is another way. And Swansea Bay is showing how it can be done. Yesterday's visit by Prince Charles to the huge Coed Darcy housing scheme near Neath was official recognition of a remarkable turnaround. Here is a site with a once proud industrial past. But that has long since gone and there was a danger it could have become just another un-used mess. Now, slowly, it is being cleaned-up and reclaimed with a large amount of money and commitment, not least from developers who are taking some tentative steps into the still murky waters of new build homes. Rising from the ashes will be a new community for the future. It isn't without its critics and there is still 20 years of building ahead.
