Summary
THE consultation process surrounding the proposed closure of Fairwood Hospital draws to a close in just a couple of weeks. The low turn-out at this week's public meetings will have done little to safeguard its future.
The health board's plans to prioritise community care are commendable, but its unwillingness to see Fairwood as part of a programme of community care is not. Fairwood is important because it provides a short-stay service to elderly, frail patients who are rightly discharged from expensive acute beds, but perhaps not confident enough to return home. If you do not have the comfort of family support the prospect of returning home can be daunting, regardless of the package of care planned for you.See the full content of this document
