The result, in this seriously heavyweight programme, was some Mendelssohn by turns sonorous, massive and balmy, a Beethoven sonata beautifully shaped, even where it might have been a touch more animated, and one of the best performances of Chopin's four Scherzi that I have ever heard or ever expect to hear.
