Summary


I WAS educated through both the Welsh and English mediums many years ago in a grammar school in Aberystwyth. I passed my GCE in six subjects which included English, Welsh and French. Unable to find a job on leaving school after taking A-levels, I moved to England for the next 38 years, where my Welsh qualification was totally ignored. I would suggest that unless one is preparing to stay in Wales all of one's working life, one would be better off having a foreign language.

The problem of reductions in the number of students on university language courses has arisen mainly as a result of the previous Governments' national curriculum limitations, which appeared to result in the dropping of such subjects; made worse in Wales by the compulsory Welsh element.
