THE modern day police force was started in 1829 by the MP Robert Peel, the original brief was, and presumably still is, to prevent and investigate crime. Having identified and arrested the accused, he is then handed over to the court for trial, by a magistrate, or jury trial at Crown Court.

That is of course unless you happen to be in the Dyfed-Powys police force area. I refer to Mike Cotton's letter, Post July 24, where a schoolboy was attacked near Glan-y-Mor School. The yob responsible was simply cautioned -- the police term for let off -- by the police, who appear now to be taking on the extended role of Judge and jury. They say that this is in line with Home Office policy.
