Creating a cob building may strike some as a classic exercise in New-Age hippie self-indulgence. What, it could be asked, is the practical use in the 21st Century of these buildings made from earth, straw, sand and water, with the ingredients mixed in a decidedly low-tech way by foot?

The fact they can apparently survive under their hand-split oak roofs for 700 years says something about their durability, but still begs the question: what is the point?
