Eye for a Good Buy? Item, Pair of Brass or Bronze Japanese Vases.

Summary

THIS week we valued a pair of brass or bronze Japanese vases. Each vase is of tapered cylindrical form with flattened shoulder and everted neck, inlaid in silver and (probably) shakudo with bamboo trees and foliage. The base has an impressed mark CPO. They are 251/ 2" high. They were made in the mid-20th century.

From the photographs it is impossible to tell whether these are made from brass or bronze but given their late date it more likely that they are of brass. The inlaid metal appears to be shakudo, a specifically Japanese alloy of copper and gold which when patinated correctly gives a lustrous black colour.
