Summary


The restaurant: Pizza Express, 40 Castle Street, Swansea city centre. Wander around any city and you are going to happen upon a Pizza Express sooner or later. The empire seems to be growing -- 360 branches at the last count -- so it gives out a confident message, one that says "we know our place on the culinary landscape". And its popularity suggests that many more people do as well.

The Swansea link in the chain is set off by the remains of the city's castle, so can fortuitously offer a bit of history into the bargain for anyone interested. It is no slight on those minds, though, that pasta, rather than the past, is the key element beckoning customersn. It is by no means the biggest branch around, but probably comes into the nice size category. It seems to have retained its freshness. The open-plan kitchen gives you a chance to see how what ends up on your plate gets there. We resisted the temptation on our Sunday evening sortie, although the window seats gave us a view of another external attraction, the big screen in Castle Square.
