.Take them back Shops are not obliged to take a gift back unless it is damaged or faulty. However, most big chains will accept returns -- and are particularly lenient after Christmas.

There is a limit to their good will, though, so don't expect to get a warm response if you try to return presents in February. In general, if you leave it longer than ten days you could run into problems. You won't get a refund unless you have the original receipt. And even with a gift receipt -- where the amount paid is not stated -- you may be offered only an exchange or a credit note.
