WHEN I returned to Swansea in 1981, the newly introduced high- speed 125 trains could reach London in 2 hours 40 minutes. Since then the time has gradually increased to three hours -- often more. Now we are told that, thanks to electrification of the line at a cost of Pounds 1.1 billion, the journey time will be reduced to, wait for it, 2 hours 40 minutes. Some progress!

Now we are nearly bankrupt as a country, and less than a year before a general election, the Government finds the money for this project. And we will still end up with the same journey time as 30 years ago. In the meantime, other European countries have been introducing 200 mph trains on electrified lines. Truly the UK is on the slow track!
