THERE are 73 vacant doctor posts in hospitals in the Swansea Bay and Bridgend area, it has been revealed -- nearly 40 more than reported earlier this week. And, as the Post has reported previously, the shortages are down to new strict immigration rules rendering it harder for NHS trusts to recruit healthcare staff from overseas. The information on the high number of vacancies within Abertawe Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust has come from South Wales West AM Alun Cairns.
He asked the trust for information on doctor vacancies at all grades, including specialists. He said: "I was concerned about staffing levels at hospitals throughout the trust after decisions were made to transfer neurosurgery from Morriston to Cardiff because of a shortage of middle grade doctors.
