READING the report in the Post on Saturday,February 6 "Letter threat over hospital smoking row", and the editorial comment the same day, prompted me to recall the recent holiday my wife and I spent in Japan in November/December last year.

We discovered a total ban on smoking -- which was in complete contrast to my last visit nearly 50 years ago, when almost 90 per cent of the adult population smoked. Not only is there a complete ban on smoking in enclosed premises, shops, offices, hotels, restaurants, museums and galleries, but also in the streets and parks, except for strategically placed smoking points.
