WALES Under-20s starlet Matthew Morgan again gave notice of his huge promise in Swansea's defeat at Tonmawr. The fly-half scored two tries -- one a stunning solo effort -- but the home side claimed victory in an excellent game.
Just What Drives Our Boxers On?
WHY do boxers set foot in the ring? In a special feature, we speak to two Welsh boxers at opposite ends of the spectrum, one a former champ still chasing glory on the world stage, the other trying to eke out a living as a journeyman pro. It is a revealing insight into what keeps a boxer going as he approaches a half-century of fights, with only a handful of wins behind him.
MUMBLES continued their drive for promotion from division three west when they trounced Laugharne 58-5. Andrew Evans and Andrew Claypole each bagged two tries with Lee Rimmel, Steve Bollom and Tom Longdon getting one apiece. Justin Price kicked 23 points. All Laugharne could manage was an unconverted try by Gareth Davies.
FURNACE maintained their division five west promotion drive with a 28-11 success at Bynea. Scrum-half Luke Jenkins went over for two tries while prop Chris Jones, No. 8 Ben Williams and fly-half Ashley Powell also crossed. Powell landed a penalty.
Amman Kick-Start Their Promotion Push
AMMAN United returned to winning ways after their shock reverse by Cardigan when they overwhelmed Aberaeron 42-16, a result which re- ignited their division four west promotion aspirations. They cruised over for six tries with Neil Williams leading the way with a brace of touchdowns and Rhys Thomas in fine form with the boot as he landed six conversions.
Jones Grabs Try Brace As Pantyffynon Crush Blaenau
PANTYFFYNNON stayed at the top of division six west by a point from Nantgaredig after overcoming Blaenau 37-12. Centre Dylan Jones led the charge with two tries. Rob Davies, Matthew James, Craig Daniels and Sean Higgins also crossed. Hooker Nick James kicked two conversions and a penalty.
CORUS produced a five-star display to shock Uwic 45-22 at Margam, a result that keeps them in with a chance of finishing runners-up in division one west. They crossed for six tries courtesy of Geraint Long, Simon Evans, Chris Kinsey, Sean Crockett, Gbemi Fisher and Rhys Tucker. All were converted by Evans, who also dropped a goal.
Loughor Step Up Promotion Challenge
LOUGHOR produced one of their best displays of the season to win 23-18 at Builth Wells and step up their challenge for a division two west promotion spot. Fly-half Jamie George was particularly impressive as he swooped for a brace of tries, while Tom Davies collected 13 points with the boot.
Wizards Hold Out to Deny Quins Comeback Joy
Aberavon 46 Carm Quins 40 CARMARTHEN Quins came back so well that only a last-second knock-on robbed them of victory. Aberavon had looked in control for more than an hour of a game that referee Rhys Thomas dominated with his whistle and saw five yellow cards -- four in a crazy eight-minute spell for separate technical offences.
Gunter's Late Kick Puts Boot Into Llanelli
Pontypridd 12 Llanelli 10 LLANELLI had victory snatched away from them in injury time of a full-blooded British & Irish Cup quarter- final at Sardis Road when replacement Dean Gunter kicked the winning penalty for Pontypridd. A dramatic drop-goal by Steve Shingler appeared to have given 14- man Llanelli a late victory after their try-scoring hero Shaun Hopkins had been yellow-carded, but Ponty stormed back to grab a victory they just about deserved.
Blacks Need to Improve for Sardis Showdown
Neath 41 Glam Wdrs 35 NEATH will have to lower the error count if they are to turn the tables on Pontypridd in the Sardis Road showdown this Thursday. That was the main message to come out of an entertaining clash with struggling Glamorgan Wanderers.
Scorching Phillips Try Seals Win for Tonmawr
Tonmawr 26 Swansea 22 TONMAWR earned a remarkable 34-34 draw at St Helen's in September, but they went even better on Saturday when they edged past the All Whites in a tremendous game. Winning coach Jason Hyatt and opposite number Richard Webster were full of praise for players of both teams.
Doyle: Late Draw Gives Us a Boost
WOLVES striker Kevin Doyle hailed the 3-3 draw with Tottenham as a "massive result" in their fight against relegation. Wolves took an early lead through Doyle, but a stunning quick double from Jermain Defoe put Tottenham in control.
Gold Glory for Captain in France
TEAM captain Helen Clitheroe led by example with gold in the 3,000 metres as Britain ended the European Indoor Championships with eight medals. It was twice as many as were won in Turin two years ago. Jenny Meadows won silver in the 800m and returned to the track an hour later to anchor the 4x400m relay team to another.
PROFILE: CHRIS BROPHY CHRIS Brophy's destiny to become a boxer was set when he was just eight years old. Born in Preston, Brophy was bullied because of his nationality when he moved to Swansea.
Still a Way to Go for Dalglish
LIVERPOOL manager Kenny Dalglish admits his side have some way still to go before they can consistently challenge Manchester United for the Barclays Premier League title again. The Reds' 3-1 win over their arch-rivals at Anfield dealt a blow to the Old Trafford club's bid for a record-breaking 19th championship.
WALES Under-18s were beaten 34-17 by France at St Helen's in the first of two games in their European Championship qualifying pool. If they can beat Italy at Parbagio next Sunday, they will still get into the four-strong Elite Group at the Championships to be held in the Tarbes region of France from April 15-24.
Ramsey and Bale Could Play 2012 Part
NEW FA chairman David Bernstein wants the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey to be considered for the British Olympic football team at the London 2012 Games. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland agreed with the FA two years ago that the team would be made up of English players only, but the British Olympic Association say that is not permitted under their statutes.
