South Wales Evening Post
WHAT the hell are people doing taking knives into court? Never mind a complete lack of respect for the legal system; these idiots are showing a complete lack of civilised behaviour. The Post's Freedom of Information request revealed that 51 knives were confiscated from people going into Swansea's crown and magistrates' courts last year.
The Case for an Elected Mayor ; We Say...
DOUBTERS should not dismiss out of hand the idea of an elected mayor for Swansea. The Post accepts that such a person could provide a sharper focus for Swansea both within the city and beyond.
Salaries Can't Be Justified ; Have Your Say
YOU ask in your March 17 edition "Are council executives worth their current salaries?" After working for more than 40 years in local government, my simple answer is NO. If the Assembly Members on Pounds 50k+ are within the top 1.7 per cent of the earners in Wales, then the council bosses are the top elite earners in Wales, which just doesn't seem right for running public services, no matter what financial pressures they have to work under.
Be Careful to Tick Right Box ; Have Your Say
I AM writing as secretary of the West Glamorgan Humanist Group to encourage all your readers to think carefully about the question on religion on the Census forms they are about to receive. The results of the question are used by government, local authorities and service providers to decide how to run services and create policies.
Paperwork Is Waste of Cash ; Have Your Say
IN this age of austerity I find it amazing that every household in Wales will receive two Census questionnaires, one in English and one in Welsh. Whichever language you prefer to reply with, 50 per cent of all this paperwork will be thrown in the bin.
Wind Power Is Not Enough ; Have Your Say
THE terrible happenings in Japan may well cast doubt on the safety of nuclear generation and while reliable renewables such as tidal power can make some contribution as a substitute for nuclear, wind power cannot. It is too undependable and despite the speculators' usually quite spurious claims, the outputs of even the latest skyscraper towers are trifling.
Party's Advert Out of Touch ; Have Your Say
I read with interest the advert for the Labour Party that appeared in the Evening Post of March 14. The council tax rise was actually 3.4 per cent not 3.7 per cent as stated in their advert.
Lessons Are a Recipe for Fun ; Have Your Say
I, ALONG with a group of people from all walks of Swansea life, have been enjoying cookery lessons in the Uplands Diner for the past few weeks organised by Diner owner Lance Pardoe and chef Chris Keenan, who is showing us how to prepare first class dishes at budget prices. I enjoy watching all of the TV chefs, but a live gig is much better.
Family Take Steps in Memory of Fallen Soldier and Father
THE family of a Port Talbot soldier killed in Afghanistan took part in a 10-mile fundraising walk to commemorate the second anniversary of his death. The family of Corporal Dean John, who died after his vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Helmand Province, walked from the viaduct in Pontrhydyfen to the Cymmer Refreshment Rooms and back yesterday.
THE depth of public anger over the UK's increasing level of fuel duty has been revealed in a new survey. The research, commissioned by campaign group FairFuelUK, shows more than three quarters of Britons agree scrapping the planned increase would "not go far enough" to reduce the impact of the rise in the cost of fuel.
SWANSEA Back Care Association is holding its next meeting tomorrow. Karen Morgan, of the lymphoedema clinic at Singleton Hospital, will be speaking to the group about lymphoedema awareness at Laugharne Court in Aneurin Way, Sketty.
Money Anger Sparked Fire Extinguisher Assault
A DRUNKEN man cut himself with a knife after spraying someone in the face with a fire extinguisher. City magistrates heard Jamie Lee Pugh, 20, of Harddfan, Bryn, Llanelli, lost his temper and chased Michael Page with the extinguisher at The Foyer in Alexandra Road, Swansea.
Councils Told to Unite in Electric Rail Links Battle
COUNCILS in South West Wales have been told they must work together to fight to bring rail electrification to Swansea. The campaign to extend it beyond Cardiff is now building up a head of steam, with Neath Port Talbot Council proposing a unified approach, with the Assembly on board too. The authority is backing Swansea Council leader Chris Holley's call to the Wales and UK governments to apply for European Convergence money, the next tranche of which starts in 2014.
Electoral Reform Divides Mps As Labour Campaign Kicks Off
SOUTH Wales Labour MPs are divided over electoral reform, the Post can reveal. Swansea West MP Geraint Davies has come out in support of Labour's No to AV campaign.
Venue Switch Bid to Swell Numbers
A SWANSEA Valley Pact meeting is to have a new venue in a bid to attract more residents to attend. Clydach Pact has usually been held at Clydach Community Centre, but from this week it will be hosted by Ysgol Gellionnen.
Teenager Guilty of Serious Attack
A 16-YEAR-OLD Swansea boy has been found guilty of a serious assault on a man in the city. He caused grievous bodily harm with intent to Graham George Phillips on October 22 last year.

THE number of elderly patients suffering bedsores on wards in Singleton and Morriston Hospital has hit epidemic proportions, a health watchdog member has claimed. Alison Morgan, a Swansea member of Abertawe Bro Morgannwg Community Health Council (CHC), said some bed-bound pensioners were also suffering from malnutrition. ?How dare you Alison Morgan, you went into a meeting without the full facts and slated every nurse out there. I will speak up on behalf of nurses, we work very hard. We do no...
