Coastguards have issued an appeal to people indulging in the craze for Chinese fly- ing lanterns to let the authorities know when they are launching them. The large glowing lanterns, which are carried aloft by a flame producing hot air, can soar to more than a mile high - and be mistaken for emergency flares.
